Core Facilities and Technical Platforms

MIMS has close collaboration with core facilities on campus. Several technical platforms are connected to MIMS and MIMS also partly finances their activities. They are connected to departments at KBC (the Chemical Biological Centre) or to the Department of Molecular Biology.

The platforms provide service and support for scientists in Umeå, and in many cases nationwide. Service is offered at different levels according to the need of the specific project and due to financial and personnel resources. Analysis of a limited number of samples can be made according to set cost but also larger projects including technical development and collaborations are possible. The details vary between platforms.

The technical platforms play a major role also for courses organised withing the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR) and the Chemical Biological Centre (KBC). The courses offered are on three different levels. Short introductory courses will give a basic understanding of the technique with its advantages and limitations; more advanced courses will give detailed knowledge, and advanced “hands-on” courses are offered for those who will make the analysis themselves.

The technical platforms are financed by KBC, MIMS, UCMR, Umeå Plant Science Centre, the university, faculties and individual departments. Detailed information for the respective platform can be found on links to the repective core facility or platform.

Emmanuelle Charpentier took the Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Emmanuelle has been awarded jointly with Jennifer Doudna the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering the groundbreaking CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology. She is a former group leader at MIMS, honorary doctor at Umeå University and former visiting professor at UCMR.
