Postdoctoral Research Opportunities - The MIMS Excellence by Choice Postdoctoral Programme in Molecular Infection Medicine at Umeå University, Sweden

The MIMS Excellence by Choice Postdoctoral Programme is supporting recruitment of excellent Postdoctoral Fellows to research fellowships in the highly interactive and multidisciplinary research environment for molecular infection medicine at Umeå University: The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) and Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR).

MIMS is the Swedish node of The Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. MIMS and UCMR researchers combine a strong molecular infection biology programme with chemical and structural biology to clarify molecular mechanisms of microbial infections. We aim to recruit new postdoctoral scientists with competence and ideas that will strengthen the research environment and contribute to its renewal.

The MIMS Excellence by Choice Postdoctoral Programme is coordinated at MIMS in collaboration with Professor Emmanuelle Charpentier at the Department of Regulation in Infection Biology, Max Planck Institute of Infection Biology (soon to be established Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens).

The programme is open to all nationalities with a with a non-Swedish PhD degree in a field relevant for the programme. Features of the fellowships include:

  • Development of a project proposal forms the basis for recruitment
  • Participation in research networking activities within The Excellence by Choice Postdoctoral Programme
  • Access to MIMS-affiliated core facilities and technical platforms

The fellowships are full-time for 24 months.

Candidates for The MIMS Excellence by Choice Postdoctoral Programme are encouraged to choose one of the project ideas listed below. The PI of the considered project idea may be contacted for further information.

The candidates' merits and motivation for choice of project idea will be assessed by a panel of MIMS and UCMR scientists. A selected group of applicants will then be asked to submit a research project proposal based on the chosen project idea followed by invitation to appear in on-line interviews. Thereafter it will be decided if some applicants will be offered a fellowship.

The application should include:

  1. a cover letter summarizing your academic background and qualifications;
  2. a separate motivation letter (maximum 2 pages) specifying: i) why you are interested in performing postdoc research studies within the The MIMS Excellence by Choice Postdoctoral Programme and ii) why in particular you wish to do this with the PI and project idea selected from the list.
  3. a Curriculum Vitae;
  4. a publication list;
  5. a copy of the official PhD degree certificate (or verification that the PhD degree is expected to be completed by June 2018);
  6. names and contact details of at least two reference persons.

The MIMS Excellence by Choice Postdoctoral Programme is based on The EC Jubilee Prize 2015 that, on the occasion of Umeå University 50th anniversary in 2015, was awarded to Professor Emmanuelle Charpentier in honour of her groundbreaking research performed at MIMS between 2009-2013. Emmanuelle Charpentier revealed how CRISPR-Cas9 is an RNA-programmable enzyme that now has been harnessed as a new precise tool for gene editing and modification in all types of organisms. The funding for the EC Jubilee Prize and postdoctoral programme was generously donated by the Kempe Foundationsand the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundations.
