2019 Fernström award to MIMS Group leader Vasili Hauryliuk

vasili hauryliuk 140[2019-05-28] The 2019 Fernström Prize awardee for younger, especially promising and successful researchers at Umeå University becomes Vasili Hauryliuk, MIMS group leader and Researcher at the department of molecular biology.

The Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University decided on 22 May to award Vasili for his research on molecular mechanisms and regulation of ribosomal protein synthesis.

Vasili Haruyliuk will receive the prize and 90 000 SEK at a ceremony in Lund on November 6 2019.

In particular the Hauryliuk lab studies stringent response (SR), which is a central adaptation mechanism that allows bacteria to adjust their growth and metabolism according to their environmental conditions. The functionality of the SR is crucial for bacterial virulence, survival during host invasion, antibiotic resistance, spore formation, biofilm formation and for formation of antibiotic-tolerant phenotypic variants in clonal bacterial population, the so-called persister cells. The basic research of Vasili Hauryliuk gives new and important insights for the devolopment of antibiotic strategies.

Vasiliy Hauryliuk is Research Fellow of the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation (awarded in 2014 with 8 Million SEK). His group is involved in several research projects in the European Union and received in 2018 one of the two Swedish Grants from the European Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) together with his European Collaboration Partners for the research consortium "Development of novel ribosome-targeting antibiotics”, which focus on the development of novel antibiotics against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the WHO priority 1 pathogens, bacteria which have already become resistant to a large number of antibiotics.

Vasili Hauryliuk is since 2017 also funded by the Swedish Research Council with a 3 Million Research Grant to study novel bacterial RNA-binding proteins, the Small Alarmone Synthetases.

A few weeks ago he and his research collaborators received a H2020-Widepread grant 2019 "Molecular Infection Biology Estonia-Research Capacity building", where Vasiliy Hauryliuk is Project Management Board member for the Swedish Partner (Umeå University and MIMS). The grant is worth 796,500 Euro of which around 179,000 Euro will be allocated to MIMS.

In 2018 Vasili Hauryliuk was awarded the Estonian National Research Award together with his Estonian collaboration partners at the University of Tartu, Estonia.

Vasili's research group has published more than 50 papers, several considered highly cited papers in the field by the Web of Science database.

Vasili was recruited by MIMS as a Group Leader within the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine in 2013 and became Docent in molecular biology in 2015 at Umeå University.

About Fernström's price
Shipowner Eric K. Fernström's award to younger, especially promising and successful researchers is given to young researchers each year at each of the six medical faculties in Sweden. In Umeå the prize winner is appointed by a special committee at the Faculty of Medicine.

The motivation of the pize committee (in Swedish available):
