Consolidator Grant to Nelson Gekara

His project "The roll of DNA damage and signal proteins on the innate immune system” will be supported with 9 million SEK within the next 6 years.

“This is wonderful news and will help me to continue my research on how the immune system is connected to DNA damage repair”, said Nelson Gekara, who was recruited MIMS group leader in 2010. The Faculty of Medicine awarded him with the Fernström Award 2016.

“In this project we propose to investigate the molecular mechanisms of newly identified regulatory proteins and their function in health and disease. This project is anticipated to generate new information that can be exploited towards new strategies against infections and immune disorders and genomic instability-related pathologies including cancer.”

With the consolidator grant the Swedish Research Council will give the most prominent junior researchers the opportunity to consolidate their research, and to expand and broaden their research activities.

With Nelson Gekara two more scientists will receive the grant, Martin Rosvall, director of IceLab, and Ingeborg Waernbaum, Umeå School of Business and Economics.
